Wedding quilt?
Instead of a guest book, which I would never look at again and it would only gather dust, I am planning on having a table set up with quilt squares and different media to permanently decorate the squares (paint, markers, etc). Does anyone know a good website to get wedding themed fabrics? I live in rural Montana, so telling me to go to the mall wont work…lol.
Any ideas to add to this would be appreciated as well.
Thanks a bunch!
Great idea – I’m sure you’ll treasure the finished quilt. My favorite online fabric store is Hancocks of Paducah. They sell top quality quilting fabric. This is a little more expensive than the stuff you can get at JoAnn’s, but it’s worth it in the long run. You’ll really need to browse through the fabrics to find something that appeals to you.
As for the project itself, here are a few suggestions:
1. A good fabric for the part that people will write on is Kona Cotton, by Robert Kaufman. It comes in many colors, and you could use anything from pure white to snow to cream, or even a pastel color. The fabric is substantial, not flimsy, and is great to work with. Hancock’s of Paducah carries it.
2. Iron freezer paper to the back of the fabric that people will be writing on. It will be much easier with the fabric held flat and stiff.
3. Use markers that are made specifically for use on fabric. The easiest one to find is Pigma by Sakura, but go to Mister Art or another online art store and search for fabric markers.
4. Be sure to iron the decorated blocks before you sew them together, and definitely before you wash the quilt. Most fabric markers need to be heat set to be permanent.
